Premier League stalwart and England international Danny Ings sported a very different hairstyle in 2023/24 pre-season training and games, following a hair transplant at London’s Mayfair Hair Clinic (a bespoke VIP service of the Wimpole Clinic).
So what do we know about Danny Ings’s hair transplant? Let’s take a look at which procedure type he had, how many hair grafts he needed, and what results he might expect.
Yes, Danny Ings has had a hair transplant at the Mayfair Hair Clinic. It was performed by Dr. Kieran Dayah, an FUE haie translant specialist.
So what led Danny Ings to get a hair transplant in the first place? Let’s take a look at his hair journey over the years, and the extent of his hair loss.
Danny Ings had a pretty full hairline during his time at Burnley, which spanned from 2011 to 2015. However, you can see that he has a naturally uneven hairline, which is very common, and not always a sign of hair loss.
By the time he signed for Liverpool, Danny Ings had a much straighter hairline, leading to speculation he had a hair transplant around his mid 20s. This hasn’t been confirmed, but you can see a change in Danny’s hairline when he played for Liverpool in 2017:
He’s also sporting a much longer hairstyle, suggesting a newfound confidence in his hair by this time.
Despite his possible hair transplant in the mid-2010s, Danny Ings showed signs of hair thinning following his move to Southampton:
While he still has a relatively straight hairline, there is some thinning through the mid-scalp. So Danny may have experienced ongoing hair loss despite his hair transplant.
This is common among men with male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is a progressive condition, which means it will get worse over time without preventative treatment. That’s why it’s often recommended that you use Finasteride after a hair transplant and/or Minoxidil after a hair transplant to prevent further hair loss.
Further thinning can be seen in Danny’s hairline during his time at Aston Villa and soon after joining West Ham:
Danny Ings’s hair transplant took place following the end of the 2022/23 season. Danny Ings returned to training and pre-season at West Ham with much shorter hair, though showing the early signs of regrowth:
It only takes a few days for a hair transplant to heal, so you won’t need too much downtime after a hair transplant. As a result, Danny Ings was able to get back on the pitch before the start of the season.
It takes around 12-18 months to see the final results of a hair transplant. However, most patients start to see a significantly fuller hairline after four to six months. So the results from Danny Ings’s hair transplant should start to be visible around November-December 2023.
Danny Ings had an FUE hair transplant. This is the most popular type of hair transplant among men with androgenetic alopecia, with over 75% of men choosing FUE [1]. That’s because:
Danny Ings had 2,453 hair grafts to fill in the thinning areas around his hairline and mid-scalp. These grafts were positioned mainly around zones 1-4:
Grafts are taken from the back and sides of the head and implanted in your thinning areas. The number of hair grafts you need is determined by the amount of hair you’ve lost. This is usually measured on the Norwood Scale.
Danny Ings was around Norwood stage 3 by the time of his hair transplant, due to the thinning through his mid-scalp.
Danny Ings is one of many Premier League footballers to reveal their hair transplants. Rob Holding’s hair transplant is one of the most famous, with his fantastic results having been achieved by Dr Sciacca at the Wimpole Clinic:
England cricket captain Ben Stokes’s hair transplant was also performed at the Wimpole Clinic, with Dr Mir Malkani leading the procedure:
“I got a lot of comments from the lads on the team before and after I had [my hair transplant] done. They’ve said in their own words that it is definitely the best one they’ve seen.”
But hair transplants aren’t just for the rich and famous. Hair restoration is much more affordable than you might think, especially if you tackle it at the first signs of hair thinning.
