Hair Transplant Los Angeles Cost: Complete Analysis 2026

California has more cosmetic surgeons and higher demand for cosmetic surgery than any other state in the U.S. [1]. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as the city of Los Angeles is the home of Hollywood, where there’s enormous pressure to conform to celebrity beauty standards. According to research published in 2023, 40% of American participants said that progressive hair loss would stop them feeling as attractive and confident as before [2].

As a result, LA is also one of the most popular cities in the U.S. for hair restoration surgery. In fact, the United States is also one of the best countries for hair transplants, too. Nearly half of all LA hair restoration clinics (48%) are based in Beverly Hills, one of the most desirable areas in the city.

Many celebrities have alopecia and Hollywood stalwarts like John Travolta, Mel Gibson, and Will Arnett are rumoured to have had celebrity hair transplants in recent years to help restore their hair. Hair restoration procedures aren’t just for movie stars though. In 2024, members of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) performed more than 58,000 hair transplants in the U.S. and Canada [3].

Studies suggest that both men and women with extensive hair loss are willing to pay an average of $4,000 to restore their hair, with some saying they’d spend up to $6,375 [2]. 88% of respondents said they would pay 10% of the average US income on a hair transplant.

But does the cost of getting a hair transplant in Los Angeles price non-celebrities out of the market, forcing normal individuals to turn to medical tourism for their hair loss in countries with lower safety standards? Furthermore, are all LA-based clinics worth the money?

As part of our series of studies into hair transplant costs around the world, we’ve surveyed 42 LA hair restoration clinics to find out how much it costs to get a hair transplant in Los Angeles.

How much does a hair transplant cost in Los Angeles?

We requested hair transplant quotes from 42 LA clinics, using the same photos and asking for the same desired result. Here’s what our research shows:

  • The average cost of a hair transplant in Los Angeles is $11,590 (£8,726)
  • The average price per hair graft is $6.96 (£5.24)
  • The highest per-graft quote was $12 per graft, while the lowest was $3.50
  • On average, consultants recommended 2,120 hair grafts for the procedure
  • Only 18% of clinics offer a free consultation — the average consultation cost is $150
  • The average LA hair transplant cost ($11,590) is almost double the highest price men and women with extensive hair loss said they would pay ($6,375 for women, $6,000 for men).

What impacts the cost of a hair transplant in Los Angeles California?

The cost of a hair transplant depends on multiple factors:

  • Degree of hair loss — The more coverage you need, the higher the cost.
  • Type of hair transplant — FUT can be more expensive than FUE, as it requires greater surgical skill and is less widely available.
  • Location — Thanks to their prestigious location, hair transplants clinics in Beverly Hills (and elsewhere in LA or California) can charge more.
  • Facility and service costs — Clinics may add on costs for medications, consultations, and aftercare services.
  • Agency and referral fees — Some websites act as referrers to clinics, so they may incur additional costs which are passed on to the patient.

You’ll need to consider these factors no matter where you get your hair transplant. But in LA, where prices are among the highest in the world, it’s especially important to be informed and selective, and know exactly what value you’re getting.

Why you need to know who your hair transplant surgeon is

It’s important to avoid websites that don’t list a surgeon on their website. Thanks to the booming popularity of hair restoration surgery, there are more clinics cropping up that don’t always have the right credentials to perform FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) procedures. If the website doesn’t list a surgeon, it’s impossible for patients to know exactly who will perform their procedure.

14.3% of the clinics we surveyed didn’t list a surgeon on their website. When we removed these clinics from our results, the average graft recommendation for our mystery shopper fell from 2,120 grafts to 1,815 grafts.

As in the UK, affiliate hair restoration clinics in Los Angeles (which typically don’t advertise a surgeon) often inflate how many grafts are needed. This allows them to charge more and cover their referral fee.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only change we saw when we removed these affiliate sites from our dataset. The average price-per-graft decreased by almost 50%, while the surgical experience was inflated to entice more people to choose these cut-rate clinics. Furthermore, because the surgeon’s name is hidden, it’s impossible to verify their actual experience.

Why you should avoid clinics without a visible surgeon

When you don’t know who your surgeon will be, you’re taking a big risk on safety and surgery success. Reading reviews for the clinic can give you a false sense of security. However, the surgeon may change often, so while some people may see good results, there’s no guarantee that you’ll achieve the same.

Beware flashy websites

Many established LA clinics have outdated websites. This suggests that word-of-mouth is the most common way for reputable clinics to find new patients. Many patients trust family and friends to recommend a great surgeon who’s achieved strong results for them.

Meanwhile, the internet is the best place for rookie clinics to find clients, thanks to the ease and affordability of setting up a flashy new website. Patients who are relying exclusively on internet searches to find a clinic run the risk of encountering great websites hiding inexperienced surgeons.

If you don’t know anyone who can recommend a surgeon, it’s a good idea to look at trusted third-party review sites like Trustpilot. That way you can find out real patients’ experiences with specific clinics and surgeons.

Know the risks associated with affiliate clinics

Affiliate hair transplant clinics are fairly common in competitive areas like Los Angeles. The clinic acts as a referrer to another clinic or surgeon, taking a cut in the process. That means the affiliate is really just a salesperson, and may not have the knowledge or experience required to give you a proper diagnosis or treatment recommendation.

There are many risks associated with affiliate hair transplant clinics, from misdiagnosis to invalidating insurance [4]. That’s why prospective patients must know the signs of black market hair transplant clinics operating in LA.

Typical signs of black market clinics include:

  • Pushy sales advisors who are very keen to take a deposit.
  • Not knowing who your surgeon will be in advance of your procedure.
  • Suspiciously low prices and too-good-to-be-true packages.
  • Guarantees and warranties (these are unlikely to be honoured).
  • Limited information about pre- and post-procedure care.
  • AI-generated before and after images.

If you’re unsure about the quality of their sales and marketing process, it might not be wise to trust them with surgery.

The risks of unlicensed hair transplant clinics in Los Angeles

Most clinics in the U.S. operate in a safe way, adhering to strict safety laws and using approved modern techniques. However, when clinics hide vital information, such as who your surgeon will be, it should make prospective patients think twice about working with them.

In 2024, 91% of ISHRS hair transplant surgeons reported that up to a quarter of the hair transplant repairs were due to a previous black market procedure [3]. 6.5% of surgeons said this was true of up to half of their cases. These surgeries are performed by unlicensed surgeons who often don’t have the qualifications or experience to successfully and safely perform invasive hair transplant procedures. As a result, they often result in hair transplants going wrong.

According to the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, unlicensed technicians put patients at risk of misdiagnosis along with the performance of unnecessary or ill-advised surgery. Complications or poor results may also not be covered by malpractice insurance, so it’s essential to avoid these black market clinics at all costs [4].

While most black market hair transplant procedures take place abroad, where medical safety laws aren’t always followed to the letter, it’s important to be aware of the risks of unlicensed clinics and surgeons. Knowing exactly who will perform your surgery can help you choose a safe, licensed clinic where you’ll get the results you deserve.

Los Angeles hair transplant cost vs Harley Street, London cost

The US is the third most expensive country to get a hair transplant, after Canada and Australia [5]. It’s just ahead of the UK in fourth place. But the total cost difference between the US vs the UK is staggering: in the US, you’ll pay 70% more for the same procedure.

For our UK hair transplant cost analysis, we requested graft and cost quotes for the same mystery shopper as our Los Angeles hair transplant cost analysis. The average cost in LA was $11,590 (£8,726), while the average cost for the same procedure on Harley Street was $7,562 (£5,694). So a similar procedure could cost more than 50% more in Los Angeles.

Beverly Hills is famous as the home of the Hollywood elite. It’s also the most prestigious medical district in Los Angeles. Like London’s Harley Street, Beverly Hills is where many of the best hair transplant surgeons operate.

Patients based in the UK (and even those overseas) flock to Harley Street for private medical care and cosmetic surgery, thanks to its reputation for quality surgery and excellent standards of patient care.
