Andrew Garfield’s Hair Transplant: Rumours, Photos, Evidence

Andrew Garfield — star of Spiderman, The Social Network, and dozens of other Hollywood blockbusters — has an enviable head of hair. But is this his natural hairline, or has Andrew Garfield had a hair transplant?

While Andrew Garfield’s hair has never been truly thin, some photos do show a bit of recession around his temples. This is a classic symptom of male pattern baldness, and one of the reasons men turn to hair restoration surgery. But while Andrew Garfield has spoken about his hairline in the media, he’s never revealed if he’s had a hair transplant.

Here, we’ll explore everything you need to know about Andrew Garfield’s possible hair transplant, from graft numbers to graft placement, as well as supplementary hair loss treatments he might be using.

Has Andrew Garfield had a hair transplant?

It hasn’t been confirmed, but changes in Andrew’s hairline over the years suggest he may have had a hair transplant. If so, this is likely to have been FUE, since this is a more discreet procedure that’s also appropriate for low graft transplants.

Andrew wouldn’t be the first celebrity to have a hair transplant and keep it under wraps. Unless you’re an action hero like Bruce Willis or Jason Statham, plenty of Hollywood actors rely on thick, full hair to get them the roles they want. It’s one of the reasons actors like James Nesbitt have had multiple hair transplants.

Andrew Garfield’s hair timeline

To discover whether Andrew Garfield has had a hair transplant, let’s take a look at how his hairline has changed over the years.

2010-2011: Norwood stage 1

Andrew Garfield’s hairline 2010-2011

Early in his career, Andrew has little to no thinning around his hairline. It was neat, straight, and full, with plenty of density through the mid-scalp and crown. This is a great hairline for someone in their mid- to late-20s, as Andrew is here, with no signs of thinning.

The Norwood Scale measures the extent of male pattern baldness. Here, Andrew Garfield is at stage 1, with significant thinning.

2012: Early thinning

A couple of years later, however, Andrew started to show signs of temple hair loss and a receding hairline. These photos from 2012 show a slight increase in hair loss at the edges of his forehead.

That said, his hair loss in these photos is still pretty light. He may have started using preventative hair loss medication like Minoxidil or Finasteride around this time to minimise any further thinning.

2015-2018: Temple hair loss

This slicked-back hairstyle from 2015 exposes a little more of Andrew’s progressive hair loss. Receding hairline hairstyles that sweep back over the scalp are best avoided since they tend to highlight areas of thinning.

A few years later, Andrew has developed a fully fledged receding hairline. Again his swept-back style emphasises the thinning around his temples.

Andrew Garfield still has plenty of density through his mid-scalp, so his hair still looks thick and glossy. But temple hair loss creates a more mature hairline, which is still age-appropriate for a man in his mid-30s, as Andrew is here.

2021-2025: Straighter hairline

If Andrew Garfield has had a hair transplant, it’s likely to have been between 2018 and 2021. These photos from 2021 (left) and 2022 (right) show Andrew taking to the red carpet with a noticeably straighter hairline and more density around his temples:

By 2024, Andrew Garfield’s hairline is still going strong. In his early 40s he’s managed to revert his hairline back to Norwood stage 1. Whether he’s achieved it with non-surgical hair loss treatments like Finasteride or an FUE hair transplant, it’s safe to say Andrew’s hairline has never looked better.

Does Andrew Garfield use Propecia?

Andrew referenced his possible use of Propecia — the branded version of Finasteride — in a 2021 Wired interview.

He also says he’s joking about using Propecia, so it’s unclear if this has actually helped with his new temple hair growth. But Finasteride is a really effective hair loss treatment for men with male pattern baldness, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Andrew Garfield is using it to maintain his hairline.

How many hair grafts did Andrew Garfield have?

Andrew’s hair loss was never particularly dramatic, so it’s likely he only needed a relatively small number of hair grafts. Based on our hair graft estimation chart, Andrew Garfield probably needed around 1000 to 1500 grafts to fill in his temples:

Cost of Andrew Garfield’s hair transplant

If Andrew Garfield has had an FUE hair transplant of around 1500 grafts, this is likely to have cost just under the UK average of £4,820, based on our hair transplant cost analysis

Hair transplant prices depend on several factors, including your chosen hair transplant clinic location. If Andrew Garfield got his hair transplant in Los Angeles or on London’s Harley Street, he may have paid more. The average cost of an LA hair transplant is $11,590 (£9,200).

How does a hair transplant work?

Hair transplant surgery is normally a straightforward outpatient procedure. Your surgeon will remove the required number of grafts using your chosen extraction technique (FUE or FUT):

FUT vs FUE hair transplant

FUT tends to be used for high graft hair transplants, but it does leave a small scar at the back of the head. Many celebrities choose FUE, as it’s a more discreet procedure with virtually no visible scarring.

What are the benefits of a hair transplant?

The benefits of a hair transplant include:

  • Restored self-esteem — Restoring your hair can give you a much-needed confidence boost.
  • Natural-looking hairline — Unlike hair fibres, wigs, and other temporary measures, a good hair transplant from a reputable clinic will give you natural-looking hair.
  • Long-lasting results — Many people don’t need top-up transplants, especially if you manage ongoing hair loss with Finasteride, Minoxidil or platelet-rich plasma therapy.
  • One-day procedure — Surgery usually takes no more than 6-8 hours, so you can go home the same day.

FAQs

Andrew Garfield favours a neat cut with textured styling. You’ll want to go a little shorter on the sides (but steer clear of a harsh fade) and leave plenty of length on top. Use some wax or pomade to texturise the top of your hair.

Tons of celebrities have had hair transplants. Here are just a few of the famous faces known to have had surgical hair restoration procedures:

A hair transplant is permanent, so it can last a lifetime. But you may need to use hair loss management medications to maintain it, such as Minoxidil or Finasteride. These treatments can help prevent ongoing hair loss, keeping your hair looking thick and full.

In the early stages of hair loss, Finasteride can help to regrow your hairline. One study found that Finasteride could stop frontal balding in 70% of men within a year of use [1]. If your hair loss is more extensive, Finasteride can help prevent further hair loss, but regrowth results may be limited.
