Anton Du Beke got his second hair transplant last year, and he couldn’t be more delighted with it. When speaking about the transplant, he said: “It’s honestly one of the best decisions I’ve ever made – I feel 25 again! [1]”.
If you’ve seen Anton over the years, you may wonder what prompted the Strictly star to opt for a hair transplant not once, but twice. In this article, we will explore:
Anton Du Beke is a household name, best known as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing. Born on July 20th 1966, he specialised in ballroom and Latin styles from a young age and appeared in every series of Strictly since 2004.
He’s also presented several TV shows, including This Morning, and has written a popular series of novels. He is known and loved throughout the UK.
Anton Du Beke had his first hair transplant at Norwood stage 3
Anton has had two hair transplants — one in 2017 and one in 2024. He had both of his hair transplants to treat symptoms of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). The Norwood scale shows how this condition progresses if left untreated.
Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss, affecting 80% of men by the age of 80 [2]. When discussing his reasons behind choosing a hair transplant, Anton wrote:
“Image is very important to me. If, as a performer, you’re known for having a good head of hair, should you start to lose it, you lose it very publicly and it can very much affect one’s confidence. [1]”
After his transplant, Anton shared,
“I feel fantastic, like a new man — it’s given me so much more confidence when appearing on television or having my picture taken and I’m so glad I took action when I did. [1]”
As a child and a young man, Anton had a healthy head of hair and a normal hairline. But over the years, his symptoms of male pattern baldness began to appear. Here, we’ll look at his hair over the years and how it has changed following his two hair transplants.
In 2011, when Anton was 45 years old, he had early signs of male pattern baldness. These included a receding hairline and some hair loss around his temples.
By 2016 Anton Du Beke’s hair loss was more noticeable. His hairline had moved further back. He had lost more hair around his temples, and he had started to develop an M-shaped hairline. At this point, he was around stage 3 on the Norwood scale.
Anton had his first hair transplant in 2017, at age 51. By the time of this picture in 2018, his results were visible and you can see his hairline has become thicker and more of his temples are covered by hair.
The image above shows Anton’s hair in 2023. While he retained the results of his last hair transplant, his frontal hairline and temple coverage were still not as thick as he wanted.
To correct this, he had a second hair transplant in 2024 (when he was 57). Here, you can see the results of this transplant, where he now has a straight hairline and a thick head of hair.
Anton is very happy with the results and said:
“I personally think it was the best thing I ever did. I feel enormously better. It’s not a vanity thing, although I think I’m going to get more work. It literally makes me feel better about me. I did it for me [3].”
Anton has not disclosed the exact type of hair transplant he had, but it was likely follicular unit extraction (FUE). Many people choose FUE, especially when hair loss isn’t very severe, because it has a short recovery time and leaves no visible scarring.
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT), on the other hand, leaves a visible hair transplant scar on the donor area. FUT can still be the best choice in some situations because it allows the surgeon to transplant more hair follicles in one go. The scar can usually be disguised with a minor FUE procedure.
Anton shared that his first hair transplant cost £10,000 [4]. £10,000 is significantly more expensive than the average UK hair transplant cost, but that was likely not a concern for Anton as a wealthy celebrity.
As Anton had a similar number of grafts transplanted in his second procedure at the same clinic, it’s likely that he paid roughly another £10,000 in 2024. Anton’s hair was around Norwood stage 3 at the time of his first transplant. The average cost for a stage 2-3 transplant in the UK is £4,820.
It may seem logical that more expensive hair transplants are higher quality, but this is not always the case. Our research showed that there was no correlation between the surgeon’s experience and the price per graft in the UK. However, the results of Anton’s procedure are very natural-looking, and Anton himself is extremely pleased.
If you decide you’d like a hair transplant, you’ll first need a consultation with a hair transplant surgeon. Your surgeon will assess your type of hair loss and decide whether you’re a good candidate for a hair transplant.
If you are, they’ll work with you to design your new hairline and decide how many grafts you need. On the day of the procedure, your surgeon will apply a local anaesthetic to your scalp and prepare the donor and recipient areas.
They’ll then extract hair follicles from the donor area, usually the back or sides of the head, and implant them carefully into areas of hair loss. The hair transplant recovery process lasts around two weeks, although it will take several months for your results to show. Anton shares his recovery experience below:
“I was able to have the surgery and be back at work within 8 days. Two days after I was back doing the school run, four days later I was on the driving range, and eight days later I was back to work. [5]”
The transplanted hair usually falls out after several weeks (known as shock loss), which is the normal part of the process. Around 3 to 4 months, the new hair starts growing in and full results become visible at around 12 to 18 months. You’ll have regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon to check the progress and make sure everything is going smoothly.

Declan Donnelly does not appear to have had a hair transplant. His publicist also denied in the past that he has had hair transplant surgery. However, he has likely taken some steps to improve hair growth, possibly Minoxidil, Finasteride, or PRP hair treatment.
A hair transplant is permanent, so you can enjoy your new hair for many years to come. 10 years after a hair transplant, you should still have healthy hair growth although you may need further treatment if you continue to lose hair around the transplanted follicles.
Turkey is popular for hair transplants because upfront costs for a Turkish hair transplant initially seem very cheap. However, beware of deals that seem too good to be true — Turkey has a high number of black market clinics where the risk of hair transplant side effects and hair transplants gone wrong is higher than reputable clinics in the UK.
Most surgeons generally recommend waiting 7 to 10 days to wear a hat after a hair transplant, or any type of headwear for that matter. This is to protect the new grafts, which can be very delicate in the early days.
