Jude Law’s hairline is a modern mystery. While he’s steadily lost hair over the years, his hairline has often seemed to rapidly improve before receding again.
These sudden changes have made people wonder whether Jude Law had a hair transplant. Hair transplants are very common — according to research, every 13th man has a hair transplant [2]. They may be even more common in celebrities, whose appearance is constantly in the public eye. In this article, we will explore:
Jude Law was born on December 29, 1972, in London. He’s an actor and film producer who rose to fame in the 1990s and early 2000s with roles in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain, and Enemy at the Gates.
More recently, he starred as Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes and Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts series. He’s received two Academy Award nominations and multiple BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. Law is also involved in theatre, with acclaimed performances on the West End and Broadway.
The honest answer is: we don’t know. Law has never spoken openly about having a hair transplant or any type of hair treatment.
However, evidence suggests he probably didn’t have a transplant. Hair transplants are permanent, so his improvements should have lasted over the years rather than disappearing several months later.
Jude Law’s hair has changed significantly since his early acting days. However, at times it seemed to suddenly improve before worsening again. Here, we’ll look at how his hair has changed over the years.
In 2003, at 30 years old, Jude already had early signs of male pattern baldness. In this photo, you can see he was developing an M-shaped hairline and had brushed his temple hair forward to hide early signs of thinning and balding.
Seven years later, by 2010, Jude Law’s hair shedding was more visible. His temple hair loss was more pronounced, even though he continued to brush his hair forward to hide thinning areas.
By January 2018, Jude’s hair loss was even more visible. Around this time, he appeared to be at stage 3 on the Norwood scale (a chart used to track the progress of male pattern baldness — see the full scale below).
However, by December 2018, Law’s hair appeared to have made a miraculous recovery. His M-shaped hairline was much more subtle, as was his hair loss around the temples.
Based on this picture, he looks more like a stage 2 on the Norwood scale. Male pattern baldness doesn’t reverse without treatment, so what happened?
But in 2024, Jude’s hair loss was back with a vengeance. In this image, he appears to be at a stage 3 to 4 on the Norwood scale. This suggests he didn’t have a hair transplant in 2018, because the results would have lasted to 2024 and beyond.
Jude Law has a type of hair loss called androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). It is the most common type of hair loss, and affects 80% of men by the age of 80 [1]. Its progress can be tracked with a chart, the Norwood scale, shown below.
Although male pattern baldness follows this predictable pattern, different men experience the condition to different degrees. Some men become completely bald by the age of 30, while others never progress beyond a stage 2 — even into old age.
Male pattern baldness is driven by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Some hair follicles are genetically sensitive to this hormone, often those around the forehead and crown.
Over time, DHT causes sensitive follicles to shrink and produce shorter, thinner hairs in a process called miniaturisation. Eventually, they may stop producing hair altogether.
If he didn’t have a hair transplant, why has Jude’s hairline improved and then worsened at certain times? Here are several potential reasons.
Medication for hair loss (like Minoxidil or Finasteride) can help regrow hair loss from male pattern baldness. However, the effects usually only last as long as you take the medication.
If Law took one (or both) of these medications for several months and then stopped, it may explain why his hair appeared to improve and then worsened again several months later.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) hair treatment is a type of regenerative medicine. It involves taking a sample of your own blood and processing it to create platelet-rich plasma.
This plasma is then injected into areas of hair loss, where it can stimulate hair follicles for growth. Again, effects last several months, but hair loss is likely to return if you don’t keep up with consistent treatments.
The sudden improvements in Law’s hair may be as simple as clever styling. Growing his hair longer, combing it over areas of hair loss and using hair thickening sprays are all ways to create the illusion of greater hair density when you’re going bald.
In some films, such as Spy in 2015, Law’s hair appeared thicker than usual. While his natural hair was wavy and thinning, his hair in Spy was thick and straight, although he retained the M-shaped hairline. Some speculate Law may have worn a hairpiece in this film and others.
If Law decided to have a hair transplant, he would have several options. The two main types of hair transplant are follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT).
Both types of hair transplant involve moving hair follicles from areas of healthy hair growth to areas of hair loss. However, FUE and FUT differ in the follicle harvesting process.
FUE uses a micro-punch tool to harvest individual hair follicles, leaving tiny scars which are nearly invisible. FUT, on the other hand, involves harvesting a strip of skin containing many follicles.
This allows more follicles to be moved in one go but leaves a long, thin hair transplant scar on the donor area. It’s often possible to disguise this scar with a minor FUE follow-up procedure.
If you’re losing hair in a similar pattern to Jude Law, you may have male pattern baldness. It can be hard to diagnose your own hair loss, so our expert trichologists are here to help.
With diagnostic trichology tests (like blood tests for hair loss and hair pull tests), these hair doctors can figure out why you’re losing hair in no time. Once you have a diagnosis, they’ll work with you to create a comprehensive treatment plan.

Many men with a receding hairline choose a short buzz-cut, or shave their scalp altogether to hide their hairline. However, Jude Law currently has a textured mid-length style, suggesting he’s not afraid of showing his true hairline.
Prince Harry may have had a hair transplant at some point for his male pattern baldness. However, evidence suggests it’s more likely that he’s used non-surgical methods to manage his hair loss over the years.
In general, hair transplants have a very high success rate. Hair transplant success rates range from 97% to 100% at the Wimpole Clinic. However, hair transplant regrets are possible, particularly if you choose a cheap clinic abroad to save some cash. Turkish hair transplants, for example, come with a higher risk of black market surgery and complications.
Many celebrities choose hair transplants to get a more youthful look. Rob Holding and Ben Stokes have both had successful hair transplants at the Wimpole Clinic. Other celebrities who may have had transplants include Jamie Foxx, Kevin Costner, and Salman Khan.
