FUE Hair Transplant Surgery

The FUE hair transplant method is the most popular procedure for men. FUE or “Follicular Hair Extraction” involves removing groups of healthy hair follicles or “grafts” from the back of the head and placing them into the bald or thinning area. 

By using short-term anaesthetics, the FUE transplant procedure minimises patient discomfort, even when extracting and implanting up to 3000 grafts. This method allows for fast recovery and minimal scarring, meaning that the patient can keep their hair as short as they want in the future without any scar tissue showing. 

We also offer follow-up treatments to stimulate hair growth and aid recovery. The Wimpole Clinic’s treatments includes a range of alternative treatments as well as high-frequency laser treatment to further aid hair growth after the FUE hair transplant procedure

Our Specialists - Michael May (FRSC)

Michael May (FRSC) is the Medical Director and Principal Surgeon of the Wimpole Cllinic. He is a Founder Member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, Founder Member of the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery & President and President of the European Society of Hair Restoration Surgery to name a few.

Mr. May entered private practice in 1982 when he first became involved with hair surgery, since then, he has dedicated his career exclusively to the science and practice of hair transplant surgery and hair restoration.

He qualified at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London after which he trained and registered as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Mr. May was instrumental in developing the revolutionary technique of follicular unit transplant (FUT), and subsequently he also presented papers and lectures in the UK and Europe to professional colleagues. He quickly became recognised by his piers and colleagues as a leader in the field of follicular unit hair transplantation. He specialises in hair restoration surgery covering; FUE, FUT lateral slit, eyebrow, eyelashes, beards, side burns, burns, and repairs.

Our vastly-experienced surgical team is led by Michael May and they have worked together for over 20 years and are among the most skilled and experienced surgeons in the field of hair transplanting. Hair Preparation

The donor area is prepared by washing and shaving an area from the side or back of the head normally ear to ear. A local anaesthetic is applied to reduce discomfort whilst the hair transplant surgeon uses a state of the art electronic punch to extract the individual hair grafts. An antiseptic dressing is applied to the donor area which can be removed the following day.

Hair Extraction

The grafts are extracted using a 0.9mm electronic punch and categorised into grafts containing one, two or three hairs. Once selected by Wimpole Clinic’s technicians, the hairs are prepared for transplantation. The hair extraction process typically takes between 1-3 hours, depending on the number of grafts to be extracted.

Hair Placement

The agreed design of the frontal hairline is marked out before surgery begins. Using a fine needle, small slits are made in the scalp area into which the hair grafts are placed one-by-one. The hair grafts are placed evenly into the small openings to match your existing hair pattern, angulation and desired density. This takes between 1-4 hours, depending on the number of grafts to be placed.

"The day before my procedure I met with Warren (the Clinics customer advisor) and Dr May who again explained the procedure and also designed my new hair line to show me what the finished result would look like. They took their time and explained the pros and cons of each alternative hair line, until we collectively settled on an age-appropriate result.

The following morning, I went to the clinic at 7:30 am to receive some mild sedatives and commence the procedure. The procedure itself took 8 hours in total and was painless. We had a one break for lunch and a quick toilet stop.

Both the doctor and his entire support team were exceptional. The clinical assistants where very helpful in explaining what was happening and also advising on their progress.

The clinic organised a taxi to take me back to the hotel and give me some mild painkillers to help me sleep that night. 

The clinic had organised a number of follow-up consultations to ensure my head was healing properly before my scheduled long haul flight back to Hong Kong. They were able to remove the vast majority of the scabs before my flight. I simply kept a hat on during the flight and felt no discomfort."
