Both Keeps and Hims are well known in the world of men’s health and products. But which of these brands would win in a Keeps vs Hims best choice for hair loss treatment contest? It is difficult to say, as the hair growth products they offer are rather similar. Moreover, both their product ranges are FDA-approved and generally considered safe to use, and they both offer consultations with medical specialists to determine the best treatment plan.

There are also some notable differences between these brands: while Hims is generally more expensive than Keeps, it also has a wider range of hair loss products. Moreover, while Keeps is more closely focused on hair loss than Hims, it is not available outside of the US. Hims, on the other hand, also has a UK branch.

However, keep in mind that both Keeps and Hims mostly offer products that can help with male pattern baldness. While some of them may also help treat some other conditions, such as mild alopecia areata or common scalp problems, they cannot be expected to cure all types of alopecia.

Moreover, these companies rely mostly on patients self-diagnosing their hair loss, by answering a form about their condition. For effective treatment, you may need a more careful examination, which may include a dermoscopy, a scalp biopsy or hair loss blood tests, to get to the root of the problem. So if your hair is falling out, but you are unsure why, it is a good idea to see a trichologist in person for a diagnosis before ordering any treatment online.

What are Keeps and Hims?

What are Keeps and Hims?

Keeps and Hims are two well-known US telehealth service providers, who sell a variety of men’s health products, ranging from sexual health enhancers to hair loss treatments. They offer consultations with licensed medical specialists and propose treatment plans which are customised to their clients’ needs. They can even offer prescription hair loss medication, such as Finasteride if this treatment is approved by a physician (if you don’t already have a prescription, their specialists can provide one if you are eligible).

Once you have chosen a treatment plan, you can subscribe and receive it regularly through the mail. However, some of their products are also available as a one-time purchase, with no subscription or treatment plan needed. Both these companies will deliver your order to your doorstep, in discreet packaging.

What is the best choice for hair loss between Keeps and Hims?

We have analysed both Keeps and Hims brands with a focus on 5 points which are particularly important for consumer experience: product range, pricing, product safety and effectiveness, availability and customer satisfaction. Here are our results:

What is the best choice for hair loss between Keeps and Hims?

1. Product range

Keeps specialises in male hair loss and sexual health and most of its products fall into one of these two categories. While they have recently added a few skin care products to their brand, they are still far from having a skincare line.

Hims, on the other hand, has a much more varied product range. Besides male hair loss and sexual health products, they also have skincare, weight loss and mental health lines.

When it comes specifically to hair loss treatments, both brands carry the most frequently recommended hair growth medications for men (Minoxidil and Finasteride), as well as hair thickening shampoos and conditioners and medicated shampoos for dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.

However, Hims offers a wider variety of hair supplements, as well as a volumising shampoo and conditioner. They also offer some customisable value pack combinations, which Keeps does not provide.

2. Pricing

Keeps prices are significantly lower than Hims if you are willing to purchase a 3-month subscription (6 and 12-month subscriptions are also available). However, it should be kept in mind that, unlike Hims, Keeps also charges a shipping fee of $5, which can add up to your total costs. Moreover, while Hims offers free follow-ups as needed with their medical specialists, so they can track your progress, Keeps charges $5 for follow-up consultations.

Whether it is more cost-efficient to order treatments from Keeps or Hims depends on the frequency with which you plan to purchase products and on whether or not you will be requiring additional consultations with their medical professionals.

          3. Safety and effectiveness

You will be happy to know that both of these companies are safe to purchase hair loss treatments from. Their products are FDA approved, they make sure that you have a prescription for the medications which require one and offer consultations with licensed specialists to ensure that you are getting the appropriate treatment for your needs.

Most of Hims and Keeps products rely on the same two types of hair loss medications, in the same forms and concentrations: Minoxidil and Finasteride. Studies have indeed found these effective for promoting healthy hair growth and preventing hair shedding in certain kinds of alopecia, especially androgenetic alopecia (female or male pattern hair loss) [1][2]. The concentrations used in Keeps and Hims products are generally considered safe (they use 5% topical Minoxidil and oral Finasteride 1mg ).

While it is debatable how effective some of their supplements are in preventing your hair from falling out, they are likely also safe to use to treat thinning hair.

However, be aware that while both of these brands offer safe products, you may still experience some of the known side effects of Minoxidil and Finasteride, as follows:

          • Finasteride shedding
          • Skin rashes

          4. Availability

While both Keeps and Hims ship to all US states, Keeps does not offer international shipping. Hims, on the other hand, has recently opened a UK branch and ships all across the UK for free (including prescription medication shipping). However, you likely cannot get all the products listed on the US website in the UK. The UK branch only lists a narrower available product range (you can still get Finasteride, some forms of Minoxidil and some blends containing these treatments).

When it comes to consultations, while Hims offers free consultations with medical professionals licensed in the US for its American clients and with licensed UK doctors for its British customers, Keeps does not even offer consultations to all US states and territories (Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C. and West Virginia are excluded).

          5. Customer satisfaction

Looking at popular review websites such as Trustpilot, Hims has a much higher number of client reviews than Keeps, and at the same time, a far superior rating. In fact, Keeps seems to have a poor rating (1.6), mostly due to issues with credit card charges, subscription cancellation and customer service. While some clients also complained about Hims customer service, most of their reviews have 5 stars (56%), while most of the Keeps reviews only have 1 star (79%) and only 11% of them have 5 stars.

On their own website, Keeps has far more positive reviews, scoring 5/5 stars out of 6429 customer ratings. Hims also boasts 4.75/5 stars on their own platform, out of 1179 total reviews.  While the number of Trustpilot reviews for Keeps is too small for confident conclusions, it may be a good idea to take the levels of customer satisfaction expressed on a neutral rating platform into consideration when choosing a hair loss treatment provider.

Do Keeps and Hims products really regrow hair?

Some of the hair loss products sold by Keeps and Him can be effective against certain types of alopecia. We’ve even put them on our 10 best hair growth products for men that really work. That is because they contain ingredients such as Minoxidil and Finasteride.

Topical Minoxidil has proven efficiency in treating androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) and has also been shown to help stimulate hair growth in other types of alopecia, such as alopecia areata, chronic telogen effluvium, or traction alopecia but also chemotherapy-induced hair loss. It works by dilating the blood vessels in your scalp to allow more oxygen and nutrients to reach your hair follicles [1].

Finasteride is the most recommended and effective treatment for male pattern baldness. It works by preventing the excessive production of a male hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which binds to androgen receptors in your follicles, making them shrink and stop producing hair [2].

However, other hair growth products they promote, such as biotin-based gummies or shampoos, require further evidence to prove their efficacy. That is because studies performed so far found biotin supplements inefficient for hair loss, especially if you don’t have a biotin deficiency [7].

Furthermore, not all types of alopecia can be treated with the same medication and sometimes, you may find that Minoxidil and Finasteride aren’t working for your hair loss. Some types of scarring alopecia (e.g. lichen planopilaris or discoid lupus), more advanced forms of alopecia areata or even common scalp problems such as may require steroid creams or steroid injections to improve.

What if Keeps and Hims hair loss products are not enough?

Sometimes, your male pattern baldness can be too advanced for Minoxidil or Finasteride to curb effectively. Or you may simply want better coverage on specific areas of your head, to fill in your temple hair loss, to mask a receding hairline or to cover a bald spot on your crown. That is when a hair transplant may be your best option.

Hair restoration surgery has become increasingly popular in the past years, as technology has evolved. New techniques have been perfected so you can get a natural-looking hair transplant with minimal scarring. Regardless of whether you opt for a FUE or FUT type hair surgery, the best hair transplant clinics in the UK have a 97-100% success rate.

If some years ago only celebrities got hair transplants, now it has become much easier for anyone to do so. While hair transplant costs may seem high at a glance, keep in mind that they are an investment in your appearance for decades to come. While you need to keep taking other hair treatments for them to work, a hair transplant is permanent.

If you want to know whether you would be a good candidate for hair restoration surgery, book a consultation now with one of our world-class surgeons. They will be happy to give you all the information you need and recommend the best kind of procedure to put your hair woes in the past.
