Gabriel Magalhães Hair Transplant: Everything You Need To Know

Gabriel Magalhães, the centre-back for the English Premier League club Arsenal, is known for his defensive on-pitch prowess. But eagle-eyed fans have noticed a difference in his hairline following Gabriel’s hair transplant in 2022.

It’s been speculated that Gabriel’s hair transplant was inspired by his club teammate Rob Holding’s hair transplant, who had a successful procedure in 2021 to enhance his hairline.

Find out everything you need to know about Gabriel’s hair transplant surgery here, including before, during, and after photos, his estimated graft count, and estimated hair transplant cost.

Did Gabriel get a hair transplant?

Yes, Gabriel Magalhães has had a hair transplant procedure. His procedure was documented in a video by the hair transplant clinic in Turkey that performed his transplant, including his hairline design and immediate post-transplant results:

Like Wayne Rooney and Rob Holding, Gabriel is one of a handful of footballers who have revealed their hair transplants. So what did his hairline look like before his procedure?

Gabriel hair transplant: Before and after

Gabriel has been a professional footballer since he was a teenager, so he’s been in the limelight for a long time. As a player for Brazilian club Avaí FC at the age of 19, his hairline was still fairly straight, with minimal signs of male pattern baldness:

After moving to Lille, Gabriel began to develop a receding hairline at age 20. In 2019, by the age of 22, he had visible hair loss around his temples. This indicates a Norwood stage 2 hairline, which is steadily progressing to Norwood stage 3:

Gabriel struggled with male pattern hair loss early in his life and his receding hairline at a young age is likely to be one of the key factors that influenced his decision to get a hair transplant at the age of 25. And as you can see, the decision paid off.

Despite some initial shock hair loss and post-hair transplant shedding, Gabriel now has a much straighter, fuller hairline.

What type of hair transplant did Gabriel have?

Gabriel appears to have had an FUE hair transplant procedure to fill out his hairline. Images show tiny wounds around the back and side of his head, which are telltale signs of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):

Other players, like Marc-André ter Stegen’s hair transplant, often opt for FUE to minimise this risk of scarring.

FUT, on the other hand, involves removing a strip of skin from the back of the head, which results in a small scar in the donor area.

How many hair grafts did Gabriel have?

While Gabriel hasn’t revealed how many hair grafts he had, it’s possible to speculate based on the extent of his hair loss. Most men approaching Norwood 3 require around 1,000 to 1,500 hair grafts to fill in their temples.

The clinic where Gabriel had his procedure states they offer “maximum grafts” as part of their FUE package. While more hair grafts can offer greater density, it’s important to avoid overharvesting hair grafts.

Taking too many grafts can jeopardise your ability to have more procedures in the future should you need them. So it’s important to discuss your graft availability before you decide on a clinic and ask how they plan for possible future procedures.

How much did Gabriel’s hair transplant cost?

Despite being a professional footballer with a reported salary of more than £2m a year, Gabriel travelled to Turkey for his hair transplant, where procedures are often cheaper than those in the UK. Prices at the clinic in question start at €2,280.

However, there are certain risks involved in opting for a cheap hair transplant. Some clinics cut corners in terms of safety and aftercare to keep costs low (though there’s no indication this is the case with Gabriel’s hair transplant). So it’s important to do your due diligence before you choose your clinic, especially if you’re planning to get a hair transplant abroad.

More footballer hair transplants

Gabriel isn’t the only Arsenal player to have had a hair transplant. His defensive teammate Rob Holding had a hugely successful hair transplant here at the Wimpole Clinic.

Rob has opened up about the impact his hair transplant has had on his self-confidence and mental health:

“I struggled so much with my hair and self-confidence. I have had so many messages about where I had my procedure. The Wimpole Clinic in London treated me so well and I am so happy with the results. I’ve had so many messages off other people affected by [similar] mental health issues and self-confidence issues, I couldn’t recommend this place enough!”

As the stigma around hair transplants is reduced, more footballers are coming clean about their procedures. Jurgen Klopp, Wayne Rooney, and Danny Ings have all opened up about their hair transplants in recent years, as have many other non-sporting celebrities.

Considering a hair transplant?

As more celebrities reveal their hair transplant journeys, the procedure’s popularity is also rising among non-celebs. More and more men are opting to medically or surgically restore their hairlines with hair transplant treatment.
